An Ale from Brewery Ommegang gets my Elusive 5 of 5 Rating!

I decided after a run through the several theological posts it’s time for to discuss a fine lutheran beverage. If you have seen my posts on ales before, you may know that I enjoy my ales dark, belgian, and strong. This is one is all of the above and very worthy to be discussed.

Brewery Ommegang has done it again. Another great brew from a brewery that seems to consistently deliver the quality. This time it is a collaboration with Alesmith.Brewing Company. “I will leave it to Ommegang to best describe the details of the collaboration.

“Philosophy and Velocity combines two iconic imperial beers from East and West: Brewery Ommegang’s Three Philosophers, and Alesmith Brewing’s Speedway Stout. For this project, each brewery crafted a singular blend to release through their own channels. From the East Coast, Ommegang brewed a Belgian-inspired version of Speedway Stout to blend with their Three Philosophers Quadruple Ale.”

This ale presents like a barrel aged ale, but it’s not. It packs a punch at an ABV of 10.8%. It’s dense and sticks to the side of the glass. The ale pours into the glass black onyx with a limited head which is caramel in color. I could not find nutritional information on this brew, but I have no doubt that there is more than 200 calories in the 16 oz can. There is an aroma of alcohol and tannins (which is interesting since it isn’t barrel aged) present on the nose. This is another beer that is definitely worth sipping like a fine bourbon. The initial taste is a little boozy but mellows as it crosses the tongue with sweetness of caramels, plums and maraschino cherries. The mouthfeel is quite smooth with a slight hint of aged malts. This ale is a great treat in the fall with the lower temps. It truly warms you up as you drink it.

The average rating on RateBeer is 3.96. At BeerAdvocate it is rated a bit higher at 4.05. This is a fantastic ale that I gave an elusive 5.0 out of 5.0 on Untappd

I am truly looking forward to Alesmith Brewing Company’s West Coast take on this ale.

  1. Brewery Ommegang is unfortunately not local to us. It is in Cooperstown, NY; however, Ommegang’s brews are generally readily available in beer stores that carry a wide selection of craft brews.
